Subject: The Real Karajan
Author: Raff MartinoDate: 5 Jul
This is the title of a radio programme that was aired at 12.15 BST
today. I heard this while I was at work.
BBC Radio ve is running a series of programmes to commemmorate the
centenary of HvK's birth.
In the programme below, there are insights into partly Karajan the
musician, but also Karajan the person. He worked with a huge range of
people; and one man who was interviewed stated that as far as he could
tell, HvK never uttered anything dergoatory about any minority; as the
son of a Jewish woman, he said he would have removed all connections
with him.
Yes, there parts of his character that were arrogant, proud and
narcissitic, but the often quoted rumours of his past during the war
years are put into something like context. There were also triubtes
ftom those who worked with him who hinted at a very private and
likeable man away from the podium and the recording studio.
