As someone who has incurred vendettas, malediziones, letter bombs, and
nasty
e-mail with words like "So's your old man" and "Derek Jeter sucks"
because i
have wondered about "how can anyone not hear what I hear.....in regard
to a
few singers (2 baritones,etc.)..I know we all WEIGH diferently..
I know people who would not allow Olivero and Gencer and Modl
anywhere near their precious collections.....and about Sondra..yes, I
hear some
flutter and a "generic' quality....but I also hear a fabulous
instrument.....and
love her so much....and no one (even me) has the right (cojones0 to
dismiss a
singer because in THEIR EARS the singer is unworthy.
People love to trash Licitra, Giordani,Netrebko..three great singers
in MY
VIEW...Not for everyone... Certain things annoy some of us.....but it
is an
individual question as always.....
I have been guilty of "expressing my opinion as a
fact"..which of
course it is NOT...It is just that I sometimes have this "How come you
cannot
hear what I hear" thing... Just watch the movie reviews by Ebert(not
there
anymore) and Roeper or when gene Siskel was with us..They are FILM
EXPERTS...but
often they differed in opinions as much as we do with opera..so "who
was
right????" (NO ONE!!!!)
Do you think I am afraid to tell you that I enjoy Lugosi in "Devil
Bat" (a
Z movie) and am bored with Citizen Kane. ...and that is the way of
things....
I am sutre Sondra and all the rest are not hiding under the
bed
weeping that not everyone loves them...Even Angela thinks she can sing
Carmen in
two years ..no accounting for delusion!!
I love "flawed singers" just as most of my
friends ,unlike me,
are "flawed."
Vive la difference(again) and viva
liberte,
egalite, fraternite(I know the "e" has an accent on these words) and
Radvanovsky..
