Although it's true I've not had occasion to order from Ed recently (I
succeeded in acquiring copies of his entire video inventory of Jose van
Dam several years ago) I had no complaints about my dealings with him.
His "catalog" listings were always pretty up-front about the quality and
any short-comings of the items he had on offer. One cannot expect
"pirate" tapes (some of them from a video camera in the audience) to be
commercial quality. Even if the original tape was a VCR recording of a
televised performance, it would NOT be the same quality as a commercial
recording, and the copies for sale are frequently many generations away
from the original tape. However good the quality of the vendor's
equipment, it must inevitably fall short of a commercial recording.
Since few (if any) of the performances on Ed's tapes were ever AVAILABLE
commercially, I count myself fortunate to have them, whatever their
flaws. IMO, if you want a technically perfect recording, buy a
commercial one, whether or not it features the singers you would most
like to see - otherwise accept what's available and be grateful there
are a few people out there willing to cater to your more specialized
"needs".
